PRESIDENT’S REPORT 2011
Having joined the executive table of the Dauphin and District Allied Arts Council (DDAAC) at the 2011 AGM in June, there were a few moments where it felt like I was standing on the running board of a fast moving train. The executive had been working on its Action and Strategic plan, which directed much of the progress of the WAC and resulted in having the Constitution, Bylaws and Policies passed at the AGM.
Feeling we were on a firm, but ancient foundation, DDAAC started to look outside the building and into the community for support. As a result, the working relationship cultivated between the board and the city has been most beneficial. We thank the council representative at our board meetings for passing along all pertinent information. Informing our local MLA has put WAC on the province’s radar as well, which gave DDAAC the thrust to proceed with long-term renovation plans.
While WAC has seen some cosmetic improvements with paint and flooring, the goal to renovate our bathroom facilities and Old Fire Hall was kick started with the creation of a couple new committees. The Building committee was created to discuss smaller projects at WAC, field concerns from affiliates and renters, connect with WAC staff and work toward a permanent spectator liquor license for the building.
What is still informally called our “Big Ask” committee was created by inviting experts in their field to assist DDAAC in realizing some of our long term goals through a multi-phase renovation project. While new bathrooms and work to the Old Fire Hall will kick start the Big Ask, the focus will be to make WAC more self-sustaining by improving opportunities for creating revenue through rentals, performances and sales.
As a result, DDAAC has embraced social media to get our message out with a new website and the use of Facebook. Sharing information has been a priority, along with working more closely with our affiliates. Teamwork and a sense of aiming for the same goals will ensure a bright future for WAC.
